Had a blast at the Punk Rock BBQ - Winter Edition at the Liquid Kitty. The BBQ is always cool, but this time was extra fun, because after a quick Sylvia set was the debut of Filthy Lucre - a tribute to the Sex Pistols. Tim Napalm on vocals (Radio Napalm host, former Flipside and Alternative Press writer) did a great version of Johnny Rotten, backed up by Adrien Anthony on drums, Sylvia J as Steve Jones, and Dave Arnson on bass. Dave started the set as Glen Matlock in a coat, then stripped down to become Sid Vicious, which was extra cool because Dave wrote SYLVIA on his lovely body, and the A had a circle on it. Anarchy!
Seen some awesome bands lately! A nice surprise was Puppies and Kittens, featuring very interesting guitar by Jeff Levitz. Also last week was the massive insanity of Fatso Jetson at Silver Factory Studios, which is in a lovely new location in 10-LA. Where is 10-LA you ask? You mean you haven't heard? 10-LA is the next Silverlake! That area of LA just south of the 10 Freeway by the Crenshaw exit, where styling musicians can still find an affordable abode, even one where a band could rehearse. And we've got venues there now too - Silver Factory, McWorld, Fais Do-Do, and coming soon a new place run by Milo, Chuck Dukowski's adorable, dreadlocked step-son.
Killer fun guitar rock! VesuviaSonic has a raw 60's garage sensibility plus up-to-the-moment intensity, no retro copycats here. Then they hand off the torch to Sylvia Juncosa, who as always will rage and romp with abandon, and stoke that fire yet further. Last up is Brainspoon, featuring wild gals on guitar and vocals in a Breeders-meets-L7-and-kicks-ass thing.
